Before making the bed again, it's important that you allow the mattress to completely dry to avoid mold or mildew. Stains are not the only issue that is facing you with your mattress however.

Regular Cleaning:

It's important to vacuum your mattress regularly to help remove dust, dirt, dust mites, dried skin, and pet dander as much as possible from your mattress. Vacuuming is the best way to remove many of the allergens that seem to settle inside of mattresses.

How to Clean a Mattress

How to Clean A Mattress

Learning how to clean a mattress will let it do its job longer and better. Stains and allergens reduce a mattresses life and usefulness, so taking care of the mattress will protect your investment for years.

Choosing and purchasing a mattress is a big investment. Learning how to clean a mattress is very important to keep it both in good shape and to help keep it free from allergens and contaminants. How do you do this?

Taking Care of Stains
Learning the proper method of how to clean a mattress is very important. One way is to put baking soda on the spill right after it occurs and let it sit for about 10 minutes and then vacuum up the baking soda that has soaked up the stain. If it is a set stain, you can clean it using a mixture of soap and a little water. Some recommend upholstery cleaner for stained mattresses, but that approach introduces chemicals in close proximity to your sleep environment that may not be a good idea. If you use a "wet" approach, it is very important that you allow the mattress to completely dry before making the bed again, or you could be allowing mold or mildew to grow. Stains are not the only issue that is facing you with your mattress however.

Body fluids, including blood and urine, are taken care of in a variety of ways. Ammonia sprayed on the stain will help lift it from the fabric readily. Just be sure to rinse well or the fabric will be destroyed by the ammonia residue. Meat tenderizer can also be a good treatment, especially for blood spots; and again, rinse thoroughly.

Lemon juice has also been used to clean spots. And some people believe in sunshine as a great cleaner. Of course, getting your mattress to the sun may be a bigger challenge than you are interested in tackling.

Preventing Stains
The best prevention for stains is a bed cover and/or mattress pad. Having layer or two between the stain source and the mattress gives you a better chance of keeping the staining material from the mattress. Covers also help keep allergens out of the mattress, again making for a better night's slleep. The mattress cover or mattress pad can more easily be removed and laundered than a mattress, after all.

Regular Cleaning
It is also important to vacuum your mattress regularly to help remove dust, dirt, flaked skin, dust mites, and pet dander as much as possible from your mattress. Vacuuming is the best way to remove many of the allergens that seem to settle inside of ...

Did you realize that you spend about one-third of your life on your mattress? Is it any wonder then that mattresses get stained and dirty? What can you do when you get stains from drinks, cigarette smoke, pets, blood or urine on your mattress to keep from having to throw it out? You can learn how to clean mattress stains to help keep your mattress cleaner and healthier and to help it last longer. Here are some quick tips to help you keep that mattress clean.

How to clean mattress stains the easiest way is to prevent the stains, of course. Keeping drinks and pets away from your mattress is a big help. Another way to keep your mattress cleaner is to purchase a mattress cover to help protect your mattress from accidents. Cleaning stains up as soon as possible after they occur can give you the highest success rate, but many times, we don't even realize that something has been spilled to stain our mattress until we change the sheets. When you see the stain, you may not even know where the stain came from. How do you clean a stain without knowing what kind of stain it is? Trial and error. Here are some cleaning supplies that you can use:

  • Citrus based cleaner:
Spray this cleaning solution on the stain/stains and allow it to sit for approximately five minutes. Then take a clean, dry cloth and blot the stain gently to help remove the stain and the cleaning solution. Keep blotting until the stained area is dry to the touch. Be sure that you dry the area thoroughly or you could possibly have another problem with mold or mildew.
  • Mild dishwashing detergent:
This is another excellent cleaner when you are not sure where a stain came from. Blot the stained area with the detergent and then gently wipe it with a damp sponge. Blot the area dry.
  • Urine and pet stains can be a difficult stain to remove because you not only have to remove the stain itself, but you need to remove the proteins from the stain so that your pet will not want to use the bathroom there again. Cleaning this stain as soon as possible after it occurs is essential because this can help prevent the urine from soaking into the mattress. Blot the excess liquid up to remove as much of the urine as possible. Then you can use one of the two following ways to clean your mattress.
